Besides the much-lauded advantages of globalization there are also fears about the loss of cultural diversity. Indigenous people face particular pressure. After 50 years as a US state, many indigenous Hawaiians lament the loss of their culture and traditions. They are hoping new legislation will grant them federal recognition similar to that of an Indian tribe. They would be allowed to set up their own, autonomous government and negotiate over their own land.
